MR. MA’AM began as a joint venture among Emory University students seeking to provide a space to appreciate and honor literary and artistic work, with particular interest in increasing the visibility of queerness through creative outlets. As writers, artists, and creators, MR. MA’AM aims to publish work that epitomizes the wit, struggles, victories, and emotions of the queer community and their unique experiences.
MR. MA’AM is seeking literary and artistic work that reflects and explores queer themes and experiences. While writers need not be LGBTQ+, submitted work should be intrinsically linked to queerness and sexuality. Beyond this, there are no formal/genre guidelines. We only ask that the pieces be daring, innovative, and relevant in contemporary society.
Accepted genres include short fiction, creative nonfiction, dramatic literature, poetry, and visual art. Submitting to MR. MA’AM is free. Please email submissions to firstname.lastname@example.org. In the body of the email, include your name, university affiliation, and submission genre (poetry, short story, etc.). Please follow the guidelines below when submitting your piece.
> Submitters must be enrolled in or affiliated with a university or college.
> Pieces previously published cannot be considered. Simultaneous submissions will be accepted on the basis that the submitters will notify MR. MA’AM in the event of the piece’s publication in another magazine. The piece will then be removed from our selection process.
> Accepted file formats for literary submissions include .doc, .docx, .pdf, and .rtf. Visual art submissions should be .jpg or .png.
> Please title your submission and do not include your name anywhere on the piece.
> Fiction and creative nonfiction submissions may not exceed 7,500 words per piece. Dramatic pieces of up to 20 pages will be accepted. Poetry submissions can be up to 15 pages, single-spaced.
> Each individual may submit up to 2 pieces of prose (fiction, creative nonfiction, or drama), 5 pieces of poetry, and/or 10 pieces of visual art/photography.
